the nation's capital this weekend. cnn you can be sure is covering it all. parades, concerts, and religious services all of it leading up to the big main event, president obama's inauguration ceremony coming up on monday highlights of that event, the swearing in, of course, and the inaugural speech. white house correspondent brianna keilar joins me to talk more about this. first of all, let's talk about the speech. i understand that the president's still working on it. so what are the themes? what's the focus? >> he is still working on it. he'll be doing tweaks till the last minute. right now he's doing some major tweaks and he's been writing this during the day in the oval office but also at night after sasha and malia go to bed as well as his wife goes to bed. he has time alone in the residence to work on it. some of the major themes and we just learned this from dan lothian who covers the white house. this is sort of the fact that the president is confronting the reality of a divided washington that he'll be acknowledging that there are some divisions but he'll talk about how there's res

jump in the death toll from the nightclub blaze in santa maria, in brazil. officials telling cnn that 220 people are dead. 220. that is up from the 90 that we were originally told. this is among the deadliest fires of this type in history. it was ten years ago that 100 people were killed in the station nightclub fire in rhode island. this fire today in brazil, more than twice the size of the fire in rhode island. the cause of this fire, still under investigation. but reports say pyrotechnics may have caught some of the club's sound proofing on fire. in these kinds of disasters, people are more often killed by being trampled or by the smoke than by fire itself. we continue to watch these live pictures of this scene there. we will get some more information and a live report from brazil in just a few moments from now. >>> and back here at home, an ice storm making its way through the midwest. a major storm pushing through the plains into the great lakes, leaving as much as a half an inch of ice on roads, trees, power lines, heavy snow is also possible. i'm joined by samantha moore.

. these are the top stories we're following right now in the "cnn newsroom." >>> tragic news out of brazil. at least 233 people have died in an early morning fire in a crowded nightclub in the city of santa maria. college students were jammed inside celebrating the end of their summer vacation when the blaze broke out about 2:00 in the morning. let's go to rafael romo with the latest. rafael, how did this fire start? >> there was a concert and part of the concert included using pyrotechnics and apparently part of the initial investigation points to the fact that it might have been started that way. there was insulation, there was foam insulation on the ceiling and that might have been a possibility. now the problem is that the place was grossry clouded. authorities say it was built for about 1,000 people and there were more than 2,000 there. when the fire started with dense smoke and flames, people were frantically trying to get out of the place and that's when the problem became worse, miguel. >> rafael. many of the dead found in the bathrooms there. why was that the case? >> it was impossible for

much more ahead on "cnn sunday morning" which starts right now. >>> good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. 7:00 on the east coast and 4:00 a.m. on the west. we begin this hour with breaking news out of brazil where a night club fire has killed 90 people, but that number could go higher as more details come in. the fire is eerily similar to the station nightclub fire in rhode island almost ten years ago. 100 people died in that blaze after pyrotechnics set that building on fire. most victims were trampled to death or died from the smoke. for more on the fire in brazil, i'm joined on the phone by chasta darlington who is there for us. what do we know right now? >> well, randi, you brought up important points. what we found out from officials on the scene from firefighters, is the vast majority of the people that are pulling out of the rubble did die of smoke inhalation. they aren't finding charred bodies and they aren't feep finding people who were killed by the fire itself. some people couldn't find the exit in the darkness. there was a pyrotechnics show going on, but the people we ta

in the "cnn newsroom." how about good news? we've got some. we'll start with that regarding the flu. despite warnings we are facing an em ep dymmek, the situation may be starting to improve. the cdc is releasing new numbers that show high numbers at least declining in parts of the country. but it is still it, under line this still a very dangerous situation with widespread activity now reported in 48 states. the cdc's latest count shows 20 children have died across the country. we'll have a live report. >>> moving on, it could be one of the most shocking admissions in sports history. for much of the country through the weekend. >>> want to bring in meteorologist alexandre steel in the cnn weather service and in winter white. what's coming up with the weather? >> it's almost a joke miguel. earlier today we talked about they canceled the polar bear plunge because it was too cold. how cold is it? the good news, the arctic air that's been the culprit for this cold is this trough with this arctic air. but that will push eastward and in its place a warm ridge of pressure. so this ridge of high pressure moves in, allow for the south lit flow of air and warmer temperatures. on the whole this week, temperatures about 20 degrees warmer than where they've been. indicative of this, right now it's 22 in chicago. by monday, it will be 44. indy 50 by monday and the access of that warmth pushes south and east. louisville, nashville, remember yesterday ensconced in freezing rain? 68 flirting with 70 on tuesday. and it even moves further still on wednesday in the south carolina area like columbia 79 flirting with 80 degrees. so in the world of the temperatures, certainly a big rebound.
